I don't think this problem was as easy as John made it look. While one of my many go-tos is 'when the opponent has two or more blots in his inner board be sure to look around for plays that you wouldn't normally make' and I did realize that here I still had a hard time making the right play with the pip count staring me in the face. After the roll we're still down 20 pips so it's not a normal thing to give up our rearmost anchor when it's a high anchor being down so much in the race.
Truth be told there are a couple reasons that make it okay to do so here. The most obvious is that while we are giving up our rear anchor we have another anchor already in the 18pt. While it's not as far back we have to give up one of them soon and it is the only clean way to play this roll this turn that doesn't potentially tie us up over the upcoming rolls. Also, the opponent has made his 15pt which he also has to find a way to clear. This gives us more contact than normal. If those checkers were already on his midpoint it would be wrong for us to give up our 20pt anchor. (though not by much)
