"1. From a division eligibility perspective, there is often a large misconception among intermediate players that everyone in the Open averages 4.x or better. My long-term assumption was that this was because streamed matches and finals (likely showcasing good players) will often be played around that standard. Perhaps it is more from estimates like this a bit over ten years ago?"

Intermediates probably think almost everyone plays a 4.X or better, because that is what they will say if you ask them. :)
