I don't remember doing any specific research but I've always thought the average Open level player came in around 6.5 - 7 PR. Sounds like your and Jason's research showed it's slightly higher with that which I'm ok with.
I would certainly revise my list from then til now even without doing any BMAB research. At the time information on the subject wasn't nearly as well known or readily available so to an extent the word of mouth did hold some weight until you found out for yourself it wasn't true. I won't dare search for the post but I remember posting that when I came into the world of backgammon the rumors were flying with how good people were. I quickly came to realize that either people simply didn't know (because they were worse!?) or they were full of shit/trying to be nice.
3. How many of the players that weren't averaging under 4.0 on that list then, actually do now by way of gradual improvement?
WAG, zero.
As for how many Americans are currently or could currently play under a 4.0 I'd have to invest a little time to get a figure. Doubt it happens but if it does I'll report back with my two cents.
