The variant is simply to show why it's important not to push checkers awkwardly in the early game unless there's a reason for it. Sometimes I see people wondering how an 'innocent' shove of a checker one pip here or one pip there can make such a difference because in the immediate it may not seem to have a great effect. Down the road though when your checkers aren't ideally placed as they normally would be it can make a real difference.
