" 1) A player aesthetically prefers the experience with cups." BK

As I was referring specifically to clocked matches, could the aesthetics of rolling from cups be outweighed by the issues that can arise with their use under time pressure? Don't forget: players can still shake the dice in a cup using a BB (as I do).

" 2) Baffle boxes can be rigged. Who can certify a box as being fair? " BK

Cups can be rigged. Round shakers known as butterfly cups have a false bottom to switch the dice.

Perhaps you refer to the poorly designed and poorly maintained BB's used at the Cavendish West club decades ago, described on this forum by Joe Russell and the late Bob Glass? Is it not rather clear that the production baffle boxes generally available now would either be impossible - or next to impossible - to manipulate the dice? It does raise the issue though that - although cups with the box should never be mandatory - if a player requires that a BB is used by both players, their opponent should surely then have the legal right to decide whether cups are needed with it? I know players who do not think dice should be dropped in by hand.

When you state 'rigged' you are, perhaps, alluding to two other concepts. One is that something inside an opaque BB could steer dice onto the numbers that are wanted. Not so much less fantastical is the notion that the dice that went into an opaque BB were not the ones that came out, being seamlessly switched by it so that no one would notice. Opaque dice would help here. Any dice can be loaded to favour certain numbers, but opaque ones are in no danger of being detected visually. They are far more prevalent than opaque BB's.

Ultimately, it is up to the TD whether a particular BB is approved.

" 3) If checkers are always rolled on [the] same side, viewers of a stream might not know who is on turn. " BK

With a clock running, as it almost always is with streamed matches, they will.

" 4) There is potential for confusion on how [the] first roll of a game is to be done. " BK

It follows from Jasons reply on this point, that the owners of BB's need to understand the potential for confusion, and ensure that this roll is done in one of the three ways that avoid it.
