How do I transcribe?

Stick talked a little about transcribing matches, so I thought I would talk about my work flow. Maybe I can pick up some ideas that will make things more efficient?
These days, I record and transcribe just about every match I play in person, even when I go to the local club. That sounds like a crapton of work, but I’ve got it streamlined pretty well.
Camera: The camera I use is pretty crappy, I won’t even bother telling you the brand in case you get the bad idea of mimicking me. The good part was that it was cheap. I got what I paid for.
ffmpeg: One of the down sides of my camera is that it will only record in 18 minute chunks. If a match lasts an hour, the video will be split into four mp4 files. I use ffmpeg to stitch the files together… I created a script that will do it with one click, so this isn’t too much of an impediment. Someday I will have to replace this camera, and I won’t need to do this anymore.
Video Player: I use VLC (https://www.videolan.org/vlc/). This is great free software. What makes the process shine is the ability to speed up/slow down and skip ahead/behind, and crucially, to do so with hot keys. I typically play back around 2.5 to 2.7 times speed. When I get into bearoffs, I dial that back to 1.5. The hot keys to skip ahead (I want to say 10 seconds) are important to the process also – when I get to a position where I know the person thought a while, or between games, or on breaks, I can zip ahead by hammering the hot key. I haven’t tested this, but I am pretty sure that I can transcribe a one hour match in just under 30 minutes.
XG: I use XG to transcribe, and it’s clunky. It might be worth exploring if other bots are actually better to transcribe even if I’m analyzing in XG.
