UBK: If you are just going to automatically recube then all wins and also all losses are on 8 and that would mean would need to be at the 8a 3a match equity of 19.5% to take. However that strategy is suboptimal so can take with less than that.

This is the painfully basic thing I missed.

John's explanation is technically useful, although I know all of those calculations, so the gap in my knowledge was not technical, it was heuristic.
