I see this a fair amount where clearing from the rear leaves the board odd-ended while clearing from the middle leaves a gap. Which is worse?

I've tentatively decided that it's better to gap, but it's not usually a significant error either way. So, I'll clear the four point here. Having an even number of checkers on the three point should tip it towards that play instead of clearing the five.
