GammonVillage Monte Carlo Championship Final Report

Bill wrote in regards to checker shuffling with both hands and illegal moves, "In my opinion, there is no room in backgammon for that type of behavior."
Neil agrees: But points out that it is up to the offending player's opponents to summon the director's if they asked the offending players to stop doing what he was doing.
Sometimes these things happen because the offending player is nervous, although from what I've read I now find it hard to give Sequeira the benefit of the doubt. Here's a couple of examples from my plays over the past couple of years.
Opp "Neil, please use only one hand to move your pieces." Neil "I'm sorry, but I thought my play was completely obvious. (Entered checker with left hand, and drill his blot in my outerboard with checker from mid using right hand). Opp "Yes, but you're moving so fast that I can't follow it !". Neil "OK I'll slow down and try to remember to use one hand". Opp "Thanx :)"
Another ... Opp "Neil, please don't shake your dice while I'm still thinking about my move." Neil " OK I'm sorry, I'll be more careful" A few games later I was shaking again, but stopped myself and appologized"
Why did the above two minor incidents happen ? Well, mainly bcuz I had so much energy rushing thru my veins while playing ! So no problems here, my opp's asked me to stop what I was doing, and realizing that I was bothering my opponent I did, but had I not, I am sure I'd have been talking to the director soon. My energy and nerves were simply amping me up so much, that I was really rushing things and to the point that I was bothering my opponent, which certainly is neither polite nor sporting.
Here's a different minor incident. Opp "Neil please play it legally !" Neil "Huh, didn't I roll 64" Opp "Yes but you played 65" Neil..I'm sorry, I'll correct it" What happened here was that I'd played my 4 with the blot on the 14 point from 14/9, mentally thinking I was moving a stacked checker from 13/9. This is a common illegal move and usually, as in my case, not intended. However, if I'd made a few more illegal moves during the match, I'd suspect the director would have been summoned.
Endless checker shuffling and often with small doubles, where it's harder to see and where 5 of the number can be played and missed or where a pip can be stolen, (ie 22 played as 2,2,2,3 when the 3 really is better than the 2) is BULLSHIT and should not be tolerated.
Most of us players have a good understanding of proper sportsmanship in BG, but, alas not all do. Many minor incidents, quick rolling, unintended illegal plays, result from the player being nervous and amped up. One can certainly imagine anyone being nervous in the finals or semi finals of MC !!
Once again, don't call the director for every minor incident, but when a player persists, and you think it may be intentional..summon the director(s).
