I was hoping someone else would chime in. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Since they haven't yet I'll give you my quick two cents.

We are not hitting here to buy time though we are hitting. In the other position you referenced we have real winning chances in the prime v prime battle. In this positions we're cooked. We hit here for a combination of reasons. The first is that any other ace leaves a position that blows apart unless we roll some real special numbers. Hitting, assuming we're not hit back, allows us to push the blot forward/get it out of our hair when he enters. Or, if he does fan, now we make a five point board and can break down safely into a four point board as needed.
