Interesting discussion of the early history of the doubling in backgammon and the doubling cube at https://nebackgammon.org/index.php/early-doublers/ - it took a couple of years to settle on the doubling cube to keep score with other various methods being tried.

According to the article, automatic doubles appeared around 1930, making it unlikely that Daniel Murphy was the namesake.

Looks like "Murphy Rule" is an urban myth.
