In the original problem John did a great job of explaining why 21/15 is better than 21/14. This is especially difficult if you know that in the vast majority of similar situations the default play should be 20/14 even though it seemingly disconnects the checkers.
The overarching reason 24/18 is correct in the original problem is because unusually the opponent already has the best anchor. When these types of problems arise this isn't generally the case. If we toss the checkers back as I did in the variant shown below 24/18 drops to the bottom of the list. (and maybe somewhat surprisingly we aren't even supposed to hit anymore)
