"Don't volunteer a shot in a holding game" is a common dictum. Does it apply here?

I think so. After 7/1 6/4 the only blotting rolls I see are 62 and 55, with lots of others clearing the ten point safely or allowing another safe play. White's board only looks to get weaker, so that also argues for paying later.

Maybe 7/1 3/1 is a bit better than 7/1 6/4, but I'll go with the more normal looking one. 7/1 6/4.
