Has anyone played this BG variant

I found a pdf of a 1979 issue of GAMMON magazine with instructions for a (then) recently popular variant called Q-Gammon.
The player going first in the game, at each turn, chooses his own roll but cannot choose doubles.
The opponent rolls twice, that is, two consecutive moves at each turn. This player may double before either roll.
That's it. One player chooses a dice roll, the other rolls twice.
The article says the game has a greater skill factor than standard backgammon. Presumably this means the better player wins more often.
Never heard of it before. Has anyone played it? Thoughts?
