Running pip counts

I'd like to hear from all that do running pip counts. Do you keep the actual pip counts for both sides or do you simply keep a running total of how many pips one player has over the other. ei "I'm 122 he's 110" or "he's up 12". Also, I'd like to know how long you practiced running pip counts before you perfected the skill well enough to use OtB. Thanks in advance, Steve
