Running pip counts

For about a couple of years now, I have been keeping running pip counts (RPC) at the beginning of EVERY game I play. It's now routine. I only keep the difference.
I think keeping the running pip count does help. I don't have a great spatial sense of ahead/behind, so the numbers cement it for me. I'm also a below average pip counter, so the RPC saves me time.
I don't think keeping an RPC creates a mental burden that hinders my game, but obviously your mileage my vary.
There are times when I slip up and lose my RPC, this isn't a huge deal, when I need it, I'll just do a pip count (either full or difference) and then resume the running count.
There are times when I intentionally abandon the RPC -- blitzes and races are times when I'll do that. You might think: wait, the race is when it's most important! Actually, that's when I'm going to want the full PC and not just the difference. And by the time you get into a race, it's much faster to count.
Usually when I am keeping the running count, I have it correct.
Obviously hitting is when things get weird, Stick showed how to update the RPC on a hit, which is to just add the point number from where the hitting checker originated. If you enter from the bar, you're adding 25.
I don't necessarily recommend doing an RPC, and I certainly don't recommend starting at a big tournament. Practice this stuff at local clubs or against XG (you can turn off the pip count display).
