In Response To: The Backgammon Café - Tools for Backgammon Players (Jan Ritch-Frel)

I am checking the “Library >> How Ratings Work" section and I found this bit:

Performance Rating is determined by considering:

  1. Opponent Strength: The average rating of the opponents a player faced during the event.
  2. Results: The player’s win-loss record during the matches.
  3. Match Length: Longer matches generally carry more weight, as they reduce the influence of luck and emphasize skill.

The formula adjusts the player’s expected performance against each opponent, as predicted by their relative ELO ratings, and then compares it to their actual results. The difference determines the player's Performance Rating.

This is of course wrong: PR does not consider opponent’s strength, nor result, nor match length (it does consider the number of decisions though, so we can let this pass).

Sentences like “PR became ubiquitous with the popular adoption of Backgammon XG in 2011 by Xavier Dufaure de Citres, a computationally powerful customer-facing backgammon play and educational software version of the game” (italics mine) are telltale signs this was written with AI, and quite frankly never ever reviewed, not even once.

I understand generative AI is here to stay and I am not against it with proper human scrutiny.

I like the idea of a backgammon trainer, and I understand time-to-market is an important consideration. Charging money for an alpha product is a business decision which risks alienating the customers.
