I'm guilty of hitting too often against a backgame, it's easy to be greedy and send a 7th or 8th checker back. Here, white only has 40 pips of timing, not nearly enough for a viable backgame. Hitting increases it to ~60, which is still a bit shy, although a dance puts white solidly into viable backgame pipcount territory.

2-1 backgames need a bit more timing than others due to the opponent's ability to kill 6s and 5s, so it looks like the hit is sound here. Not sure, so I'll go with the hit.
