White needs 12 crossovers to save gammon. We'll need 12 to finish the bearoff if we rip two now. Playing two off the six puts the game out of reach for white, but means we need 14 to bear off.

Two things seem to be relevant:

1) we have almost no misses after playing two off the six while white will miss a few times.

2) playing safe may win more gammons because it wins more games.

I suppose I could add "just make the DMP play" but I won't.
