I've seen similar things come up many times OtB. What I've come to understand, because nobody in their right mind would make the bot's play when they see this for the first time, is that stepping up is our best form of counter play even though we are basically accepting being pointed on. (or so it seems at first glance)

First, we hope the opponent finds a pointing number that contains either a two or a four because then he has to rip up his prime even further. This affords us more fly shots in general, a more blotty position for the opponent, and a position that is harder for him to clean up.

Second, we need to realize that while the opponent can point on us with every roll he shouldn't. He has an ample racing lead and doesn't need to attack unless the attack will be somewhat clean. There also may be some rolls where the opponent does better to double hit instead of his other options. In those cases obviously we have a direct five to propel ourselves back into the game.

Lastly, and perhaps the most important detail though, is the opponent's other blot in our outfield. This means that when we are pointed on we will have plenty of counterplay assuming we find one of our numbers that hits from the bar. Even if we simply enter and stay out of harm's way the opponent may not be able to put his entire position back together again in one roll allowing us some counter play.

It should be noted of course that normally we wouldn't look to turn the game into a race when we're down as much as we are but here it would be a welcomed sight.
