An example from basketball is players would intentionally not take a heave at the end of a quarter to protect their shooting percentage. Often they would take it right after the horn blow in a pathetic attempt to not make it look obvious. Kevin Durant was one of the biggest names to do that. To me, instead of making himself look better by very slightly better stats, it makes me think of him as a loser player.

A couple years ago the stats rules were changed to not have it count as an attempt if missed.
