None of what many of you propose can be a substitute for bot-vs-bot play.

If two bots play a position differently during a game, the bot that wins the game does win beacause of "*how that bot plays all subsequent moves until the end of that game*"! How the losing bot or a third bot would have played the rest of the game a million times starting from that position is completelety irrelevant! How can you folks not get something this simple?

BTW: It's interesting that you all participate in a thread I started without ever referring to anything I wrote or acknowledging me even indirectly. :)

There was a time "I feel your pain" was a popular expression...
