Thanks for your feedback. Of course, it’s difficult to replace the study and analysis of one’s own games. But MBT isn’t meant to replace that. The time and effort required to analyze your own games is significant. MBT is positioned more as a companion you bring out for short sessions during which you work on one position at a time. Furthermore, the classification of errors provides significant help with your progress, a feature few tools offer. Yes, the position for the Checker Play feature is chosen at random (a randomly selected number of moves from a game played by GNUbg in 1-ply). Yes, this results in more trivial decisions. But it seems to me that from an educational standpoint, these positions are just as valuable for consolidating what you’ve learned. For the cube, MBT analyzes equity in the background to rule out overly obvious situations and force decisions where the choice is more difficult. But of course, for a player with a PR of 5, who is looking for hundredths of a point in micro-adjustments, MBT will certainly not be the most suitable tool. But for all other players with a PR between 15 and 8, I remain convinced of the educational value of MBT. The tool will help them refine their checker play and tackle the cube, which is often the neglected part of backgammon.
