Im not nearly at a playing level to opine on bot strength in backgames or much anything in backgammon, but that never stopped me.
XG isn't Jellyfish. I think XG plays backgames crushingly well, compared to a reasonably decent player. There's some players here if we set up an even 'go forward or go backward' 'likely backgame' proposition, I would willingly back against XG. Levels of play such as Stick, Nack, a few others I see here. Not a lot of other players.
The reason I think it plays well is it 'goes forward' when possible. It is really tough to see all the tactics and diversification in "I roll-she rolls' 1296 combos, or a ply past that. And so many games seem to almost have that hinge point where go forward or backward is key, and comes down to tactics or diversification.
And as I see on bgonline, where the top players get something 'wrong' it usually seems to be based on the results of tactics, a few key combos of dice rolls. Which heuristics don't handle as well as a computer that just emotionlessly adds up the weights.
Now, no idea if this position will be well played, this could develop into a deep backgame. But how often? And how often will shitty prime rolling and shitty concept of timing make XG make clear errors. I don't know, but I'm only backing the prop of a few here.
