Trophies Story

One year I went to MC and was staying and travelling with a couple other backgammon players. One you definitely know and the other you possibly know. There was a tournament in Cannes the week before which we all played in and it got a lot less attendance than the organizers expected. They already had trophies made though well in advance. The original plan was to pay 4 in the consolation and 2 in the last chance, and they would get trophies. But it ended up being 2 in the consolation and 1 in the last chance. The one companion ended up losing in the final 4 in the consolation and then lost in the finals of the last chance. He won two trophies from the same tournament without cashing. One for Consolation semifinalist and one for Last Chance finalist. The trophies were not that nice but took up a fair bit of room. We told him to just leave them behind, but he ended up lugging them around awkwardly in his overstuffed backpack for the next ten days including on a couple train trips. Finally, before flying back to USA, he realized it was not worth it and left them in the last hotel room.

This was about 15 years ago, so a couple details might not be exactly correct. If you know them, feel free to correct or add details.
