Although the Siegel Ty isn't ABT, the reg. fee in USA (ABT) tournaments has grown out of the USBGF charging directors (passed on to tournament participants) for the ABT association, record keeping, etc. - Where are you coming up with this idea? The way you phrased this makes it sound like the usbgf is charging a significant fee to the directors. The fee is $10 per player. That money helps defray the cost of the bracketing software, text notifications of match ups, marketing, name tags, and having membership representative on site.

As an organizer, that $10/player is an incredible value. As a player, it’s trivial compared to the travel expenses.

Organizers put in hundreds of hours of work and sign massive contracts, as much as a $200,000 liability if the event doesn’t sell enough room nights or gets cancelled. No director is doing it for the income. The most successful tournament I’ve ever heard of the director paid themselves ~$35/hour for the 250 hours of work they did to organize the event. That sounds more than fair to me.
