I always wondered if we really need "math" for cubeless backgammon or even for cubeful gamblegammon, beyond statistics (potato, tomato counting) and arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide)? Can any mathematician here make a case for it? And why gambling games of luck attract "mathematicians" so much? Can any mathematician here share their personal stories?

I'd say too bad if even half of the incredible claims made about it at the time would be true decades later today. Any inside info about what killed it?
