Isn't that paper: https://openreview.net/forum?id=X6D9bAHhBQ1 showing an attempt of Deepmind?

I personally don't believe that MCTS makes a lot of sense in BG. You need that if you have not a good evaluation function as in Go, but this is not a problem in BG.

They claim they beat GnuBG by a decent margin, but unfortunately they don't document the settings. E.g. if they use the same time one has to know that GnuBG playing uses only 1 core. They used 16 TPUs (funny:learning with just 1 TPU). So you compare a single core with a distributed rollout. Seems not fair to me.

And even if they achieved a high quality. Would you buy a box with 16 TPUs (every now and then on ebay for 5-10,000 each)?
