Poor Murat, you helped to make BGBlitz better….

When BGBlitz detects an error, it does the following:
- In most cases, it asks the user if it can send the log files. The log files contain information that often helps to determine the cause of the error.
- In one specific case, I immediately send an error report because the error was very severe and very rare (it had only occurred twice before, and I added additional diagnostic information in version 3.4.0). However, it’s also possible that I simply selected the wrong function—one that doesn’t prompt for allowance but only sends a thank-you message after the data is sent.
When user report issues, I also regularly ask users to manually send the log files.
As for “private data,” I essentially transmit
- the operating system (which makes sense—some errors only occur on certain operating systems; if you want to help the user, it’s helpful to know whether they should use Explorer or Finder), RAM, and the number of cores
- a few paths. For example, if individual settings need to be deleted, it makes sense to tell the user exactly where the files are (sometimes I have users who know very little about IT)
- the BGBlitz configuration. Sometimes you need the exact configuration if you want to reproduce an error. Rare but it happens.
- the license number (it would be silly if I wanted to help but didn’t know who I should help)
- and what happened in the program.
When you deliver a program to end users, you need a way to diagnose errors; anything else is like flying blind.
Anyone is welcome to take a look at what’s in the log files.
The point, of course, is to improve the software, and that should also be in the users’ best interest.
Thanks to the log file, I was actually able to fix the bug in less than an hour and I thanked him politely (By the way, I deduced that the report came from Murat based on the bot’s name).
I completely understand why Murat is upset. Helping someone? That obviously goes against his mindset. Bringing data protection into this is silly.
To put it in perspective: since version 3.4.0 that is, since March I’ve received 13 error reports from a four-digit number of users. I don’t know the number of reports for 3.2.x because I delete all reports when a new version is released.
Only Murat believes that Zuckerberg is already trembling at the thought of a new competitor.
