Backgammon World Championship 2026 (+ not so mini rant)

In Response To: Backgammon World Championship 2026 (+mini rant) (Stick)

Stick -- You beat me to it. I've been grousing about this now, and complaining about this on the BG News Facebook group. Marc Olsen gave a complete bullshit answer.

Here is an exchange so far:

BG Amsterdam: "Why do we need to sign up just to see brackets?"

Marc Olsen: "it’s really easy. We will be posting brackets when we get further in the tournament on social media as well. For now, you have to be logged in to gammon.gg to see the brackets."

J. Lee: "You're doing it wrong. Backgammon needs publicity. Hiding the brackets because you want people to sign up is a terrible approach. **You're doing it wrong.**"

J. Lee: "You also answered the wrong question. The question wasn't `Is it hard to sign up" -- the question was "WHY do we need to sign up?' Please don't obfuscate by changing the question that was being asked. You knew what you were doing."

-----

I texted Rory a couple of days ago because he's there, and I asked him if one has to sign up for an account to see brackets.

Rory: "I think that is probably true."

J. Lee: "If you have the ear of anybody there, I consider this completely terrible. Let them know."

Rory: "Agree completely."

-----

Here's the thing: Rory isn't doing to do shit. He probably does agree with me, but nothing will happen from this. This isn't a criticism of Rory... believe me, I have a THOUSAND things I can criticize Rory for, this will never crack the top thousand list.

--------------------

The whole "BG world championship is always in Monte Carlo" thing is a well-trodden old trope, let me not bring it up again. I hate the way the world championship is done, all under the guise of "it's always been done this way" which is in any universe a terrible answer. I hated watching last year's finals where the losing finalist (Doron Claxton) CONSTANTLY picked up the dice early, and his opponent and the organizers did NOTHING about it.

I'm disgruntled, and it's going to take a LOT to get back to being gruntled again.
