Thanks for the excellent review Stick.

My feeling is that Backgammon will go the same way as Chess as regards playing software. Ultimately I see all the top programs being open source and free in the near future.

Currently the top 15 or so strongest chess engines are all open source and free (Torch is private and closed source, Komodo has since dropped out of the top 15).

Chris Whittington's Backgammon-NN seems to be on a par, or maybe slightly stronger than Gnu BG. It is still very basic, but it is open source and free (as of course is Gnu).

I'm a so-so BG player and use XG, which is more than enough for me, but I'm always interested to see what can be achieved in playing strength with the latest software.

I use both XG and NJ Backgammon on my android smart phone (both great apps).
