It would appear the question is whether to hit or to cover. And if to hit, do we play Bar/23 8/3 or Bar/20 5/3? My reluctance for either is that next turn white will hit not just one, but two of my blots and I'll be worse off.

Yep, in this case I'm a pessimist. Therefore, I'm covering.
