How to bring your best game to the table?

Hello everyone, I have a Backgammon question, although not related to a specific position. The question is: how do you bring your best game to the table? Longer description below.

I am far from an expert of the game, although -- little by little -- I got my PR under 10, and in my last twenty matches on Heroes I played at ~8PR according to GnuBG. Among these last matches (mostly 13-point matches, with some 9-point and 7-point matches too), PR varies wildly: my best match is 5PR, my worst... 17PR.

I feel in the bad matches I am not concentrated, I am influenced by the pressure of the clock, I miss clever plays, I forget to check if there are blots in my opponent’s home-board, I miss flying shots.

On the contrary, when I feel good I can spot tricky moves, I have a good understanding of where the flow of the game is going, I seldom miss cubes (and even when I missed them, I *thought* about cubing) and never indirect shots.

If I could always bring my A-game to the board, I would shave at least a PR point effortlessly. But how to do that? I tried writing down a checklist to review at every move ("always think about doubling, check your opponent’s homeboard before moving, etc."). But in a fast game like Backgammon, it takes too much time and I do not feel it is working.

So my question to you: what do you do before/during a game to be as sharp as possible? Any tip is welcome!
