In Response To: How to bring your best game to the table? (Jason Lee)

I saw a post from a beginner saying they were often berated on BG Galaxy for playing too slowly and were confused, because the matches are clocked. I saw some posts telling them it's considered rude to use a lot of time for obvious plays. So I entered the fray and said 1A - there are many assholes in online bg but 1B - nearly everybody, vastly more, are really cool people, so hang in there. Then I said 'Use your clock, the time control IS part of the match conditions as you stated, don't feel compelled to rush only because someone says so.'

I use my clock. One of the first things I do nearly every match is pay attention and watch the increment time down for the first few plays. This gets my head in the game as to what speed we are playing. I don't get in time trouble... IMO the clock conditions were selected, they count. . There is a player on Heroes of equal or slightly stronger strength and one night he invited me to a 9 pntr on 2 min 15s . Well, I was tired, should have quit earlier, and I played quite slowly because I had to keep correcting plays. He always invites on 2 min 15s increment. He commented 'you play way too slow! I don't have all night' , which I agree was very true that match , lol.

But I replied 'you picked the time control, not me'. tldr he doesn't invite me anymore, and I don't invite him.

But I wondered how I could be a slow player when I never get in time trouble online and he's probably the only person in 15 years who said that. So I reviewed over a dozen matches we had played. (we have history of about 30, 7 and 9 ptrs, H2H tied) I had used more time than him in every match except one... 4 minutes left, he'd have 7. I had 6 minutes left, he'd have 8 or 9, so forth so on. Most all 9 pointers on 2 , 15s. But not a single match had I been I anywhere near time trouble. So I don't worry about his comment. I invite on 1 min 10s because 'I don't have all night'. lol Do I get in time trouble? No... So if you invite me on 2m, 15s, just be advised it might be a very long match. If you invite me on speedgammon, fine, and I'm still not getting in time trouble.
