In order to bring your best game you need to be focused during the entire game. Backgammon is such a fast paced game that you can make several plays during lapses of concentration, and that dramatically increases the risk of errors and blunders.
When trying to be focused it helps to be motivated to play and not just playing to pass time.
Also try to maintain a stable blood sugar level and make sure to be hydrated.
Take a break if you sense you are losing concentration. Sometimes catching a near oversight or starting to play too fast can be signs that your concentration is not where it needs to be.
If you can do these things, then besides playing better you also rate to learn faster.
There will always be variations from match to match in terms of how many difficult decisions you are faced with, and this will lead to variation in your PR. The variation doesn't automatically mean that you didn't bring your best effort.
