In your variant, there is a small and hard-to-isolate swing on his 44, either this turn or the one after if you can't cover or pick up. In the original problem, after he enters with a 44 he still has to roll an additional 4 before you have anything serious to worry about. Match score would be huge in your variant case, because sometimes a G and/or BG means almost nothing, and other times one or the other or both make a huge difference.
