What are we expecting white to do next turn or soon? What are we trying to do in the next turn or two that piling up on the 6-point gets us toward that goal?

I was waiting for some of the slackers here to answer but since they didn't I'll take the bait.

First, I picked this problem because I thought it possible (as it happened) that nobody would get it correct according to XG. Why not? Because humans see it as you see it, as a big old nothingburger play. Our back men are going to be even worse off next turn. It seems like a very inactive play, and it is to an extent.

What we always have to remember is that we're comparing the plays we have available to us. It may seem obvious but the fact that one play is seemingly ugly af doesn't rule it out. Here, for eg, yes, we seem to be passing the buck by playing 13/6 and that the opponent on his turn will likely only improve. Why don't we do something now!? Simply because every other play is clearly worse.

Moving our back checkers in some fashion before the opponent puts more of a lockdown on his forward position is sensible. In fact, it may even be right at dmp but it's close. Given that it's that close at dmp, it's likely wrong at unlimited because it will certainly lose more gammons than not splitting off the anchor and it won't win more than bringing another man into the zone. A big issue of the problem is that splitting to the 18pt leaves too many hit + covers. Normally we'd be okay splitting to the 23pt but we don't have any good sixes to play after we do that.

If the splits are out then there's nothing left to play but 13/6 is there? There's no sense in picking our outfield blot up as it is basically free from being hit this turn anyway. The opponent will make his forward position and clamp us in before he hits with those fly shot numbers. 13/6 stacks but hey, it's another man in the zone. It doesn't break the anchor, doesn't leave a slew of hit and covers which put us up against it. It bides time. We hope next turn to maybe launch some sort of attack to buy time. The opponent won't have anchored up because all of those rolls will be used to make his forward position. So we'll be looking at having 10 men in the zone and hoping to make the best of it. Of course there are the few times when giving us an extra roll we find a genius roll like [66 22 11] and can anchor up naturally.
