It is odd-even problems with gnubg evaluations which you probably read about. I never use 3ply evaluation except for cube in classic holding games. There are some more types of positions where 3ply is more closer to rollout but I am not sure now, maybe cube decisions in backgames or it was checker play. 4ply for checkers is definitely better in bearin position than 2ply which is famous for it's strange moves. I analyze all my matches off course with 2/2 ply but when doing analyze for some live matches I done 4ply evaluation for errors (except for those greater than 0.80) and close plays and my guess is that in 15-20% it converts 2ply evaluation. Also in many cases ~50% it change difference in equity by significant amount in both direction.
