CANNES - WSOB CHAMPIONSHIP - FIRST ROUND REPORT BY WILL COCKERELL

We discussed yesterday the mini-tantrum Rzymann reportedly threw at the conclusion of his bad beat loss to Andrieu. Well, it was apparently certainly a bad beat. 2.7 grading vs. 11.2 grading, with Rzymann a 104% favorite.
And, for the record, Ryzmann was the Nordic Open Champ and Andrieu was the unknown (?) on-line qualifier.
However, he brought a bit of it onto himself with the bizarre (in my mind) 4-4 play bearing off in the dmp game. Against his opponent's ace point game and his opponent's strong board, he opted to leave an open 5 shot (15 hits with 8 checkers off) rather than a three shot (11 hits with 7 checkers off) -- when gammons didn't matter. Andrieu rolled the 6-5 to hit and went on to win the game/match.
Rzymann was never closed out until he got all his remaining checkers to his ace point and then came in as soon as Andrieu cleared his six point (with three checkers off). So, at that point with Andrieu on roll with 12 checkers to get off Rzymann had only 8 crossovers left to win. But he rolled a 2-1, a 3-1, and, once he had gotten the trailer to his 5 point, a 4-1. And Andrieu finished with the coup-de-grace 4-4.
Only reinforces the fact that every roll and every play is very significant and continual focus, concentration, and attention is mandatory. Rzymann apparently hugely outplayed Andrieu but the one little glitch (-0.04 Snowie) cost him the match and a chance at the WSOB championship.
To add insult to Rzymann's bad beat loss injury, Andrieu then goes on to win the whole thing.
Amazing.
