I'd pay it out as follows if it were my say.

In Response To: I'd pay it out as follows if it were my say. (Mislav Radica)

I’d suggest:

Main Action Events: Championship flight: Knockout Main (increased match lengths throughout), Conso and Last Chance (5 pointers & re-buys) all with Optional Pools, all on clocks and consider a Group (16 of them) Auction (with random attendees prizes) and at least one Last 16 Calcutta Auction.

Intermediate Flight: Knockout Main and Conso with Optional Pools, players may join Championship Last Chance with a 1 point start.

Novice Flight: Knockout Main and Conso or Round Robin or Swiss (advertised as dependant on numbers) without Optional Pools, players may join Championship Last Chance with a 2 point start.

Note: I’m not a fan of Swiss for Championship or Intermediate levels – in bg it’s do or die (Knockout) mentality that best suits our game. Swiss is suitable to Novice Flight if numbers suit.

Doubles: Knockout Main only for all.

Side Action Events: Super Jackpots (best of 3 x 7 pointers per round format) format announced early in the proceedings,

Any Satellite or Qualifiers run are managed as Jackpots,

Jackpot (8 players, 7 pointers) and Mini-Jackpots (4 players, 7 pointers) for those out of other events,

Blitz Tournaments (32 players, 5 pointers) with Optional Pools for those that are out of other events and wish rapid play,

Stock-pots (2 players, choice of pointers to suit time) for those still involved in other events,

1 Pointer Tournaments with Optional Pool for those who are looking for a quick kick towards the end of the event,

Rakes on side events depend on entry fee to them,

Run and keep side action events from a separate area from the Main TD desk.

Run a Freeroll or two during the event to provide players with the “something for free” element in their value for money view,

Chouette designated area required,

Bar / seating chill out area adjacent to all action,

Players’ laptop friendly area (at least 12 stations, sockets, high quality wi-fi connection or plug in connection facility gratis),

Smoking area nearby (ideally adjacent to all action and certainly with player calling facility,)

If weather is due to be kind an optional outdoor smoking able playing area (non smokers retain preference not to play there.)

The above does: Provides players with minimum 3 matches as part of their registration fee – value for players’ money must be in built.

By stipulating that players only play in one event at a time (other than stockpots) it maximises play for all players because they are running in groups. With clock play in all but the Intermediate (clock play preferred rules operational) and Beginner events players should in theory be running at same sort of times (stock-pots keep those ahead of schedule in play.) Provides players with value for money in the number of matches they can play department.

Because more side action play happens more rake take areas are generated. By doing this rakes can be lessened which will also attract more players to side action play.

I fully understand that TV only wants to see one winner – The Winner of the Main – any other winners are of no real interest to good TV. But to attract the number and quality of players that are desirable you need to have a good number of players that will win. Just don’t film them doing so. But they might well be suitable candidates to interview so have them on hand.

With regards to Prize Fund Splits I’d go with suggestions from players – those are the people who are interested / attracted by the divvy up of the prize fund – let them basically choose how it be done (but canvas a broad range of players, not just those that shout loudest) and publicise the spilt well in advance.

Run the entire event via laptops and plasma screens – one of each per event = easy to manage and highly understandable to players. These should be networked so all TDs can tell if a play is active in another event (this is also aid the reporting of results from those players that think TDs are telepathic.)
