New World Backgammon Championship

I figured Stick'd be there in Costa Rica just for the rain forests, the beaches and the bird watching. Which of these accounts for Costa Rica being Jake Jacobs' favorite backgammon venue is hard to say.
That was then
The Costa Rican Backgammon Association sponsored the "Tournament of the Americas" in Costa Rica in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997 and in Cancun, Mexico in 1999. The tournaments were directed by Carol Joy Cole and Bill Davis and attracted an international field.
Backgammon: Costa Rica 1993 by Ortega, Esquivel, Madrigal and Kazaross presented the annotated El Cariari Masters final between Wilcox Snellings and Mike Senkiewicz, and unannotated matches featering Senkiewicz, Snellings, Tino Lechich, Neil Kazaross, Bill Robertie, Hugh Sconyers, Rageb Shadallah and Stuart Hosen. Backgammon: Costa Rica 1994 by Ortega, Madrigal and Kleinman presented the annotated El Cariari Masters final between Mike Senkiewicz and Mike Svobodny. A planned Backgammon: Costa Rica 1995 featuring Alan Steffen vs. Kent Goulding apparently was never published.
The 1997 tournament took place (a bird watcher's page mentions making time for a first round loss while not preoccupied with eyeing black-bellied whistling-ducks, violet-crowned woodnymphs and the dazzling Pteroglossus Torquatus) but the tourney results apparently never made it to FlintBackgammonews. But the 1999 tournament in Cancun was a success with 64 players in the open flight won by Rainer Witt over Michael Meyburg and 27 in the $2,000 masters jackpot won by Kent Goulding.
This is now
In March 2008 Michael Strato at gammonlife.com announced plans for a 7th "Tournament of the Americas" to be organized by a revived CRBA with marketing assitance by Strato. The CRBA's site made a similar announcement. The "New World Championship" seems to be the same tournament by another name. But the CRBA's costaricabg.com hasn't been updated since January of this year, gammonlife.com hasn't reported anything new since March, newworldbackgammon.com still has no content, and the tournament's not yet listed on the events calendar at gammonlife.com or at chicagopoint.com/calendar.html.
Henrik Bodholdt, who will be directing the tournament, is the former chairman of the Danish Backgammon Federation and director of the Nordic Open. He has lived in Costa Rica for several years.
Latest word
The latest word on the tournament is Henrick's, posted today in the DBgF forum: "vi kaemper p.t. med diverse sponsorer og hotellet, saa snart vi har faste facts kommer der nyt." That is, negotiations on sponsors and venue continue, and hard facts will be reported as soon as there are any.
