If we hit and you hit back, it looks quite nasty. Secondly, 9/8 is the only decent follow-up with the ace, which leaves us little flexibility for the future.

I took your advice of looking around for the best non-hitting play, and I prefer it. We're ahead in the race and we have a worse board. Both these factors call for a safe play. Making the 12 point looks sound to me.
