What's wrong with trying to make a "grandiose" tournament or using "World" or even "New World" in the title of a tournament?
I'll take this one.
What's wrong with it? Nothing, really. But a name does not make it grandiose. Put up or shut up, and it will be a good tournament.
I object to the naming of the tournament in Monte Carlo. What exactly makes it the world championship? Nothing, other than that's the name. Based on some of the reports, it's no great shakes of a tournament. It seems to be fairly well run, but there's nothing about it that makes it any better than any other.
Furthermore, calling the winner of a single elimination tournament (for where there is NO qualification other than dropping enough ducats) the world champion is quite absurd. We all know it.
Call your tournament anything you like. Call it the Grand New Solar System Ultimate Championship Deluxe Supremo Open Backgammon Tournament if you like -- and you won't change one iota how good or how prestigious your tournament is.
