Rules question - now CLOCKS

This is exactly why I would be more comfortable with clocked matches. Coming from 20 years of OTB chess, clocks are second nature to me. The thing that puts me off balance in backgammon is that there are very fuzzy expectations of how much time you are allowed. Thus I usually play faster than I would like, and don't take the time to count pips accurately or often enough, for fear that my opponent and/or the director are going to start complaining about slow play. I would be far happier if I knew exactly how much time I had, and could manage it myself.
Which brings up another question. In a clocked match, what happens if you go over the limit? How do they decide whether you lose a game, a gammon, etc.?
And while I'm at it, what's the general opinion about requiring clocks?
