With regards to writing down positions in a way that it doesn't provide the appearance of impropriety, I tell my opponent that i'd like to jot down this position, but i will first announce my play or cube decision, make it and pick up my dice with the request that my opponent give me a few seconds to rewind the board, jot down the position then resume.

This ensures that I'm not using the notecard in anyway to calculate pip-count or otherwise allow it to provide me with some sort of mechanical feedback in my decision making process.

I have had trouble with finding a good system for using a digital camera quickly that captures all relevant data legibly. The problem I usually have is that the score card is sometimes not dark enough or the camera flash reflects off the ink making it unreadable. I have considered just using a magic marker to keep score, but figured that this might cause problems with my thinking due to the fumes. ... Perhaps a crayon...
