While there are problems with "our" (i.e. human scientists, no I'm not a scientist, but I am human...so I say anyway) understanding of physics (which may or may not be cleared up relatively soon thanks to CERN), I'm inclined to take their word that interstellar travel is effectively impossible, or at least impractical. Yeah, impractical is more accurate.

That said, with water on Mars, it is not outside of the realm of possibility that native "aliens" might exist within our solar system, who developed before we did, perhaps on Venus, and who have cleverly managed to hide amongst us or visit us in a Star Trek "do not disturb" First Contact kind of way.

I just wouldn't hang my hat on it.

People have been known to see things that weren't there when they are very tired, such as driving late at night and seeing a mirage on the road ahead. Sounds like something that exhausted pilots might "see" when in reality there was no such thing.

Similarly people in prison in isolation rapidly lose their sense of bearing and go a bit "batty", or so I've heard (citation needed). I have no trouble seeing astronauts in that kind of mindframe, training or no training.

As far as everyone else, or even including pilots and astronauts (why are they supposed to be more credible?), don't discount the "make it up" factor. There have been countless hoaxes that were uncovered, it is hardly impossible for someone to be clever enough to stage one and videotape it in such a way that the hoax is undetectable. KInd of reminds me of all those "mysterious" crop symbols that popped up a decade or two ago like wildfire. It was merely farmers having fun with us.
