If I were ever to coach sports at any level, then my rule number one would be never, never, never publicly state that you will clobber the competition, or that you think they suck, or that you think that you are the greatest, unless your name is Muhammed Ali (sic?). If you break that rule you get benched or fined (pro players only for the latter of course), regardless of whether or not you are the superstar of the team.
Anger and/or spite has proven itself time and time again to be a powerful motivator to dig down deep and pull the last bit of energy out of your body that you didn't even know you had.
There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever (hyperbole alert) that the Froggies would've won that event if not for that "smashed" comment. It's worth noting that the dufus that uttered that statement was the one who anchored (swam last) in the relay, as no doubt his US competitor knew, and so I wasn't surprised that the American in that leg raced closed the gap somewhat anyway, although I was with the commentator and didn't think the US had a chance after the final turn, or even halfway through the final lap. It was a huge comeback.
By the way, this is turning into the Speedo Olympics, in the water anyway. Their new suit is simply heads and shoulders above everything else that came before it, and it and it alone explains all the shattering of records. Still, the better Speedo-wearing swimmers will win.
