"The Americans? We're going to smash them. That's what we came here for" is how it's usually quoted. I think it's pretty clear he did say it. The Americans didn't actually take much umbrage with it, one of them said something along the lines of the French relay squad would be very strong and the French probably were the favorites.
The U.S. guy, Lezak, set the fastest time ever for the distance of his swim. But it's not counted as a world record. It seems you can set a world record for a certain distance in a leg of a relay, which surprised me to hear, but only on the opening leg.
The French swimmer on the final leg, Bernard, who made the smash comment, apparently is a very big guy by swimming standards. So I imagine he creates a bigger wake. Lezak is a veteran, and he swam close to the lane divider in order to gain as much as possible from the draft. So the Americans did gain an advantage from that. Still, an amazing final leg.
