In Response To: Last night's Olympic 4x100 mens freestyle relay (OpenWheel)

"The U.S. guy, Lezak, set the fastest time ever for the distance of his swim. But it's not counted as a world record. It seems you can set a world record for a certain distance in a leg of a relay, which surprised me to hear, but only on the opening leg."

You can only get recognized for a world record on the first leg because of the difference in the starting process for the last three swimmers. They can get a 'head-start' on those starts because they are responding to the swimmer coming in, not a horn. (They are already in motion before the previous swimmer touches).
