In my mind, I can not find a better play than 23/18 3/2 for the duplication of 1's. Of course it also costs the 5 extra shots containing 9, but the alternative of 8/3 11/10 also has 9-shots in addition to 1's, although not 45. The real problem (again in my mind) with the point-making play is that it doesn't do anything to escape the back man. If missed after 23/18, white is in fairly good shape. If missed after 11/10, white is in trouble even though blue's position is stripped. What I would fear most then if blue misses is that blue will roll a 6 which can not be played safely, and will hit loose because of no better options. Then it could be game over for white fairly quickly, gammon and match.
